How to show customers they are appreciated.

The key to client appreciation is understanding what the client values.  In Dr. Gary Chapman’s 5 Love  Languages, people respond to 5 different categories of appreciation/love: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time and Physical Touch.
A relationship (whether a personal, professional or business relationship) is composed of one or more people.  Therefore, a show of the right kind of appreciation (the one that the client would value most) in any of those venues would work.  Dr. Chapman mentions that everyone has 2 dominant categories.  For example – if you know that your client feels appreciated (loved) with words of affirmation and acts of service – you would best be served by giving them a plaque/award with some fanfare or a special “Done For You” complimentary service.   On the other hand, if your client doesn’t like to be put on stage – then giving them an award in front of people would have the opposite affect and he/she would resent being there.
Understanding the proper acts that make them feel appreciated (or loved) is the key to a successful client appreciation program.  Then selecting items that fit one of their 2 dominate profiles would win the day.

Finding Time for Professional Growth

Everyone is busy. But if you don’t make the time to manage your career, your career will manage you. Today’s topic is how to find time for professional development.

Most people find comfort in the idea that they:

  • Don’t have time for professional or career development
  • Too busy with daily work to focus on future paths
  • Company doesn’t provide the time or funds for career development
  • Not interested in staying at this company
  • Company doesn’t have any growth opportunity for me

Whether these statements are true or not, they are irrelevant.

  • Your career and professional development is not your company or manager’s responsibility.
  • Your work ‘happiness’ is not your company or manager’s responsibility.
  • The company is not responsible for helping you keep your job.
  • You are in total control of your own career, your own time management strategies, your own personal and professional development.

Both personal and professional development can be accomplished with 10 minutes a day.  Audio tapes, short articles, online programs, discussion groups, pod-casts, as well as various mobile devices make it possible for you to study:

  • On the way to work
  • At your desk during a 10 minute break
  • Over lunch either with friends or alone
  • During your workout
  • Through a walking meditation
  • A 15 minutes distraction from television or video games
  • Standing in any type of line

Everyone has 10 minutes a day for things that are important to themselves.

Also, identify things you can blend into what you are already doing.  Some examples:

  • At meetings, search for possible mentors, learning and even promotion opportunities
  • Invite mentors, coaches and possible new employers to lunch or outside event
  • Take notes and gather data during your normal tasks with the goal of writing and submit a white paper to a conference.  While at the conference, you can participate in an abundance of other learning sessions.
  • Take notes at conferences so that you can easily turn them into reference materials.  Share them with your team and sibling departments through lunch-bag presentations or webinars.

If you incorporate these things as you go along (with the goal of continuous learning and developing), it doesn’t really add any time to your day.

Once you clarify your professional development goals, opportunities will automatically appear.  This isn’t because they magically appear out of nowhere.  It’s because your vision is now clear enough to see what was always there.

But – how is the best way to recognize opportunities

Quick Tips

  • Event that repeats …there an opportunity there.
    • Boss asks the same questions over and over again
    • Clients make the same mistakes or asks the same questions
    • A mistake is made – there’s a problem to solve – which means an opportunity
    • Whenever you are frustrated or overwhelmed – there’s an opportunity
    • Whenever you are disappointed … there is an opportunity

 

When you know what to look for – there are opportunities everywhere. This may bring an immediate feeling of overwhelm-ment and stagnant of indecision.   Jot your opportunities down as they occur (the IT Professional Development Toolkit calls this the Parking Lot Method).  Jotting them down will avoid being overwhelmed. Realize that this is merely a smorgasbord; you simply have to pick and choose.

 

Conclusion: Use your scheduled 10 minutes a day to fill your pipeline of knowledge.

Use your scheduled 10 minutes a day to shift and sort the opportunities that start appearing. Think about how which event can help you the most; which event you are most ready for; which event you can implement right now.

But all these things start with the desire and commitment to start.  Pause for 10 minutes a day and devote that to your professional, personal and career development.

How small business’ can raise prices without alienating clients

Most small business owners often underbid their services to better attract sales.  Once established, they take too long to raise their prices.  The fear is that they will lose their current client base, and therefore lose money.  How can small businesses raise prices without alienating or losing clients.
Some of the more effective methods for small business’ to raise prices without alienating are:

1) Announce price raise well in advance, as well as the reason for new rates.  Include additional benefits to them that you are being added in your descriptions.  You can also offer a “lite” version at the original price – so not to loose any clients

2) Offer “Grandfathering-in” at original price for a limited time.  Anyone purchasing the service before that date will get it at the original price.  Offer a loyalty program such that clients that continue with you (either via a retainer, or subscription membership) will remain at the original price for 1-year.  Any break in service will revert to new price.  Any new clients entering after XXX date will pay the new higher rate.  This entices ‘on the fence’ customers some incentive to purchase ‘now’.

3) Offer a Club Membership Subscription – such that a reasonable membership fee will guarantee the original price as long as they are members in good-standing.

4) Offer a referral program that allows the customer to get compensated for bringing in new-paying clients.  Anyone bringing in new paying customers  get the original rate as well as the new customer.

5) Offer an advertising program that allows customers with their own facebook social media,  newsletters, blogs and websites receive the product/service at the original price.  Create a contract that requires the client to advertise XX times a quarter on their various social media wall, newsletters, blogs, and websites.  As long as they fulfill the advertisement contract, they pay the original rate.

Remember the goal of “price increases”:  You are increasing your rate to make more money.  If you can make more money doing other things, then you have been fairly compensated.  If you can reduce marketing costs or other overheads (allowing the customer to help with those tasks), then you can afford to compensate the client by giving them the original rate.

Giving the client options to stay at the original rate often eliminates the alienation feeling.  This way, the client is the one selecting the price they are willing to pay.

Create a campaign and marketing plan around your strategies. Use it as a catalyst event.

1) Make your “price change” announcement at least 3 months advance to encourage new clients to purchase at the lower prices.

2) Roll-out your loyalty programs and referral programs at least 2 month’s in advance.

3) Call (or visit) your high-influential, high volume  clients to discuss the price changes, the reason for them, the grandfather/membership plans, etc.  Allow your clients to choose how they want to participate.  This also allows you to give them a free membership or subscription to lock them into the lower rate.

4) One week before price change, remind folks that some of the discount offers will expire on the rate-change date.

5) Do a count-down a day before the event.  Make the price change an actual event.

How to attract the clients mostlikely to pay your price for your products and services

How can small companies  reach the types of customers most likely to be willing to pay their  prices for their products and or services.
Individuals normally hang-out with folks that  are within 20% of their own salary range.  If we want to improve  our social-economic standing, we need to associate with the same income level  that we want to achieve.
We can use this knowledge in attracting the clients  that you want. 
1) Be clear and explicit in your target client  description.
    Include in your description: 
  • yearly income
  • type of neighborhoods they live
  • the size and price of the homes that they would   typically live in
  • types of hobbies
  • types of charity events
  • type of cars, boats, premier   service they use
  • type of transportation that they normally   use
  • type of events and meetings they attend
  • type of restaurants, parks, activities that they   take advantage of
  • type of magazines that they normally subscribe   
2) Then start networking and showing up at the same  places.
  • Volunteer at the charity events that   your target clients normally attend.  Pick a position that allows you to   connect and interact with your target client.  Don’t accept a position   that keeps you in the background. Since you are volunteering your   time,make sure that the ROI is to your advantage.
  • Become the program committee chairman at some of   the associations and events that they atend.  Being the program chairman   of these types of associations gives you an easy ice-breaker.  You can   then invite them to speak or attend these gathering as a way to introduce   yourself and your service.
  • Get in the position to invite some of your target   clients to speak or present at a special and prestigious event
  • Attend some open-houses of the type of homes they   would buy
  • Put on a free event in the club-house of their   neighborhood or resort/golf-club that they would normally attend
  • Get in the position to speak (or even just   introduce/MC) at some of the events and meetings that they normally   attend
  • Facilitate or organize the type of charity   event or catalyst event that they normally would attend.
  • Attend boat shows and car shows that they would   normally attend
  • Advertise in magazines that they would normally   purchase.
  • Write articles or columns in magazines or   electronic magazines that they normally read
  • Write “letters to editors” and comment on articles   that would interest your target client
3) Where ever you show up, make sure you are adding  value to the interchange
4) After you have built a relationship  with a few of your target market — ask for referrals. Even though  they may not need your services at this time, they may have friends and  neighbors that would be interested.  Remember, they will also hang-out with  folks that are in their same social-economic standing.

Avoid the ‘Let’s do lunch’ dance

Take this scenario:

  • Co-worker emails you: “Can we meet at the end of this week on this topic?”
  •         But in the email, the person does not suggest any date or time for this important meeting.  It’s just a quick one-liner with the above message.
  • You quickly email back:  “Of course”
  • You and your co-workers emails only took 10 seconds to initiate and respond, but nothing was really accomplished.  And no one took the responsibility for actually setting up the meeting.  Nothing really got accomplished here.  You are very busy and you feel that if he was the one requesting the meeting, he should be the one championing it.  He feels he is very busy and if it was important to you, you would push it.  Weeks go by without any progress and you both loose out.

2nd scenario:

  •  You get into the following email on Monday:
  • Co-worker: “Can we meet at the end of this week on this topic?”
  •         But in the email, the person does not suggest any date or time for this important meeting.  It’s just a quick one-liner with the above message.
  • You email back:  “Of course.  I am available this week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 9:00am and 11:30am.  Please pick a 30 minute slot that fits your schedule.  If none of those time slots are convenient, please send me 3 alternative dates and times – so that we can get this on our calendars.”
  •          Even though he is asking for the meeting, you are taking responsibility (able to respond to complete the task of setting up the meeting) for getting this in the calendar.  He had the opportunity to provide a handful of dates/times for the meeting that was convenient for him – but he didn’t do it.   Therefore, you provide various time blocks (that is convenient to you) to give your co-worker an opportunity to pick a time that fits in his schedule.  While you are waiting for his response, you feel somewhat restricted or in a holding pattern because you have essentially promised all those time slots for now.  But it also gives you some freedom  to schedule things around those time slots.
  • You get no response for two days.  Since you are very busy, you feel that you are in a holding pattern on this (because you could really use some of those time slots that you temporarily promised your co-worker).  You don’t want to resent your co-workers for not responding to you and you want to feel free to do what you want to do with your own time.  Therefore, you resend your previous response and also call him.   By calling him, you are escalating the request.  Because they are not at their desk, you leave a voice mail requesting them to respond to the email meeting request.
  • An hour later, you get an email from him stating: “I apologize I am so far behind this week. Can we perhaps shoot for next week? “
  •            The email still has no specific date or time for the meeting. There is still no closure to this. He did not match the urgency level of the communication.  This means, if someone calls you because you have not responded to them — you should match their urgency by calling them back.  Emailing back may be quicker for you – but it does very little to build that working relationship in a positive direction.  Emailing may be easier for you to send an excuse for not responding – but it does very little to build that working relationship in a positive direction.   Even though his email took him 10 seconds to write, it will doesn’t accomplish the goal of setting up a meeting and hurt his business reputation.
  • You respond: “Certainly.  Let’s meet on Monday, June 10 at 11:00am for 30 minutes.  The agenda will include: ……”
  •             At this point, you have given him ample opportunity to select a specific date/time of his convenience – and he continues to elect to leave it up to you.  You have given him ample opportunity to pick up the phone to rectify his delay in setting the meeting.  After all, he was the one that requested the meeting; he was the one that asked for it to be conducted ‘later this week’; he was the one that failed to respond with an explicit date/time and he was the one that postponed it to the following week.  Regardless of his professionalism, you need to keep a professional demeanor.  You are still working toward building a positive working relationship.  So, you take the responsibility (able to respond and complete the task) to set the meeting date,  the pace and agenda of the meeting.
  • Even though you did all you could do to help move this forward, it took 3 days of back-and-forth emails to accomplish this.

3rd scenario:

  • You need to setup a meeting with a co-worker
  • You email:  “I am excited about this upcoming project and really want to hear your thoughts on this topic.  Can we meet at the end of this week on this topic?  I am interested in discussing the following XYZ to accomplish <goal A> .  I know we both are very busy and expect this talk to take only 20-30 minutes.  I am available this week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 9:00am and 11:30am.  Please pick a 30 minute slot that fits your schedule.  If none of those time slots are convenient, please send me 3 alternative dates and times – so that we can get this on our calendars.”
  •         You also call and leave a voice message that summarizes what you sent in an email.  In the voice message, you include the reason for the call, call back information, and your availability.  In the phone message, you show your personality and enthusiasm for this topic.  You emphasize that you are really looking forward to working with him on this.  You are friendly and enthusiastic.
  •         The email and the phone call took you about 5 minutes to do.
  • Your co-worker calls back relatively quickly: “Hey.  Thanks for your voice and email.  I was thinking the exact same thing. Great minds think alike. My boss it out of town this week, so I am pretty swamped.  But this is very important and I don’t want it to sit too long.  Are you available on Monday, June 10 at 11:00?
  •            You say, “Yes.  That’s a great time.  Do you think we can cover those topics in 30 minutes?”
  •             Your co-worker:  “Absolutely.  I’ve looked over the agenda and it looks like you have covered all the important highlights.  If we can’t fit them in, we can schedule another meeting before we exit that meeting.”
  •             You: “Sounds like a plan.  Talk to you Monday at 11:00am.  And thanks for taking your time on this.  I really appreciate it. “
  •             Your co-worker:  “Heck, no.  I appreciate you including me in this project.  It’s really the direction that I want to go.”
  •             This telephone conversation takes less than 5 minutes and builds rapport and a collaborative atmosphere. Within 30 minutes you and your co-worker have the meeting, the pace, the agenda all ironed out (versus the 3 days just doing it by email) and so much more.

This email dance happens quite often between busy people.  Even though email seems a quick way to communicate – it’s often not the most efficient way of communicating and completing tasks.  Email often takes people days to accomplish the same thing that a phone call could accomplish it in 5 minutes.   Just because email seems convenient, it’s not always a productive way of communication.  Before you send an email, consider the following:

1) Have you included everything that the receiver  (not you, but the audience of your email) needs to accomplish your request.
Sending a quick one-liner:  “We should meet something this week”  is not providing all the necessary information for your audience to accomplish your request.

Leaving a voice mail: “Call me” is not providing all the necessary information for your audience to accomplish your request.
2) Have you emphasized the proper importance by your method of communication.
If someone is calling you because you failed to respond to their email – you need to match their level of urgency.  Do not disrespect them by quickly emailing a one-line excuse like “I am very busy.  Can we do this next week.”  Take the hit in person.  Call or even drop by their office (if you are located in the same place), to apologize for the mix-up.  People don’t normally loose their reputation on a mistake.  They loose their reputation on how they react or respond to their mistakes.  If you go out of  your way to take responsibility for your actions and go beyond expectations on making amends – you actually will improve your professional reputation.

3) Combining communication methods is often the most efficient way to accomplish a task between team members.
Combining email and phone calls is a good combination to accomplish tasks.
Combining phone calls (with an email summary of what occurred on the phone) and face-to-face meetings (with email summary of the meeting minutes) is a good combination when possible.
Combining email, phone calls, face-to-face meetings is a great combination when possible.

Bottom line: Combining communication methods and providing enough information in your communication saves time.

10 hidden time wasters that you may be doing

Many of us have complained about the lack of time at one time or another.  If you are consistently running out of time, there may be a few things that you are unknowing doing.  Some of the top hidden time wasters are below.  We often fall into their trap because we don’t readily recognize them.

  1. Allowing things to repeat without investigation and/or fixing
  2. Not recognizing opportunities that propel us forward
  3. Not reusing our own accomplishments to our advantage
  4. Spending time on unimportant items
  5. Spending all our time making and putting out fires (creating critical/ stop production situations for ourselves).
  6. Using imagined dependencies to stall us
  7. Working hard to stay in the same place; using energy to keep the status quo
  8. Not asking for exactly what you want
  9. Complaining with no explicit call to action
  10. Spending energy and attention well past the benefit

 

In my Professional Development Toolkit, I discuss how to get around all of the above.

But a quick remedy is to recognize that ‘item’ is an anagram for ‘time’ (the words use the same letters but in different order).  Remember this and then  every time an item crosses
your desk, ask yourself: “Is this Item worthy of your Time?”

Let’s take the last item 10:  Spending energy and attention well past the benefit.

This could include certain tasks at work, your current position, some work or home projects, hobbies and even some people.  As you evolve and develop you should out grow things like jobs, hobbies and even certain people.  The games and interests that you had at 5 years old are not the same interests you have today.  It is the same as your continue to progress through your life.  But sometimes we stay too long in the same place.  Perhaps it is out of a sense of misguided  loyalty or perhaps simply because it is comfortable and familiar.  Either way, the longer you stay focused on an item beyond it’s benefit to you — the more time you are wasting.  This is even true if the item seems like a worthwhile task.

For example:  You would like to get $15 for your old wooden bench-swing.  You decide to make it more presentable to assure your $15 asking price.  You sand it; you stain it; you oil it; you and add decorative stencils. You now have spent 4 days on it to acquire $25; when having it quickly power-washed (as you are already power-washing your deck) would have accomplished the same goal.

Keeping your ROI (return on investment) in mind, “Is this Item worthy of your Time?”

How do you handle a dishonest boss?

A reader writes: As an employee, how do you handle a situation if you know your manager is being dishonest? A few employees have already approached HR, but they didn’t take the issue seriously. What do we do next?

There is normally a hierarchy for these things in most companies. And it would depend upon the severity of the accusations. Since the question said “A few employees have already approached HR”, I am assuming that it isn’t a single incident and it’s large enough issue that affects multiple people.

My first recommendation is to take a step back and recognize that you don’t exactly know what is going on.  What may seem to you as dishonest — may be something entirely different.  The face that your HR manager doesn’t see it the same way, illustrates that something else may be going on.  Focus on getting clarity (versus proving someone is being dishonest).   If you go in with the mindset that your boss is being dishonest, everything he does will look dishonest. And everyone that doesn’t see him as being “dishonest” will seem like the enemy.  Instead, focus on getting a better understanding of what exactly is going on.  Once you focus on getting clarity and more information, you will see several available options in front of you.
A few things to consider doing:
1)Revisit HR and ask them the status of this situation.  You may have misinterpreted HR’s interest in the matter at your first meeting. That you interpreted as “disinterest” could be HR ‘thinking’ about the appropriate next step.  HR probably could not promise you anything at that time because he/she wasn’t sure how to approach the topic.  Allow HR a few days to investigate on their own.   Then revisit HR after a few days to get status.   If you approach HR as a group (the group of employees that previously reported together), HR will recognize that this isn’t going away.
**Document this step with email to HR(and cc the employees that have already reported this to HR as well).  Keeping a log of your steps through email and email notification will give your situation more leverage and credibility.

2) If HR isn’t taking it seriously, it may be a sign that you and your co-workers may not know the entire situation. There may be extenuating circumstances or a gag-order in place or legal ramifications for the manager to tell his team what is actually going on. It could be that the HR manager understands this, but is under the same legal obligations to say and do nothing. That could be the reason HR seems to not be taking it seriously.  Call a meeting with the offending manager, the few employees that have already approached HR”, and the HR manager.
Do not publish the meeting to people that are not already involved. Don’t make this a bigger deal than it should be. Limit this closed meeting to only those already talking about this.   The purpose of the meeting is to clarify any misunderstanding around this particular situation to stop the rumors and innuendos. Since the HR manager is already informed of the situation, having the HR manager present gives additional professionalism and balance to the meeting.  Allow the HR manager to invite and include anyone else he/she feels appropriate for this purpose.  Allow HR lead the meeting, and submit your own agenda and Q&A to be covered in the meeting (ahead of time).  If this is an honest misunderstanding, the manager, employees and HR (as a group) can quickly and openly clear up the issue.
**Document this step with email to HR(and cc the employees that have already reported this to HR as well).  Keeping a log of your steps (including phone and hallway conversations) through email and email notification will give your situation more leverage and credibility.Keep all your correspondence regarding this matter.

 

3) YOU calling the meeting and openly inviting the HR manager and manager — avoids HR inactivity. YOU providing the purpose, agenda and Q&A for the meeting (ahead of time), allows HR to meet the manager before the meeting to discuss the issue privately.  This illustrates that your only intention is to get clarification and not accuse or judge anyone.   Setting an meeting appointment is a reasonable forcing function  (for more information on Reasonable Forcing Functions, contact LauraRose@RoseCoaching.info

The item will be discussed — even if it’s to merely to say “We understand your confusing right now. There are some exciting things happening that we are not at liberty to discuss.” At this point, HR and your manager understands that by not attending the meeting and attending to this issue — only creates more confusion and a bigger problem.
**Document the fact that HR and manager refuses to meet with email to HR and manager (and cc the employees that have already reported this to HR as well).  Keeping a log of your steps through email and email notification will give your situation more leverage and credibility.

4) There is also a hierarchy in most organizations. If the HR and manager does not accept your invitation (document that), then tell them that you plan to take it to their managers or executive level — because it is affecting morale and productivity.  Being up-front with your next step plans allows HR to decide what to do next.  Having all your steps documented with the actual email dates and HR responses will be useful when approaching executive level.

5) Take it to the next line. If the HR manager is not providing the required service, then you request a meeting with the HR second-line manager and your manager’s second-line. Mention that there is an issue that is affecting morale on the office/production line that you would like to make the executive branch aware of. Mention that you require their consult on this issue.

Conclusion:   If your attitude is one of  “inquiry” versus an accusation, you will not need to take it past HR.  The only thing you are sure about is that ‘you don’t fully know what is going on’. The only thing you know for sure is that you are confused. Approach your talks to solve your confusion only. Don’t approach the situation as ‘trying to prove to people that your boss is dishonest’. When you approach it as your need to get clarity — people are more willing to meet with you. When you approach it with a chip on your shoulder, people are more likely to avoid you.

Giving everyone the benefit of the doubt is a diplomatic and honest way to approach many difficult issues.  Believing that everyone involved wants this issue resolved quickly and quietly will benefit you greatly.

In the recent interview with Steve Wynkoop (founder of SSWUG.org) we covered the “hiring” topic (don’t miss another professional newsletter tip—signup for the free newsletter here). This article covers the topic in more detail.

I recently received this question from a reader:

I currently have several positions open, and the job descriptions clearly outline the experience necessary. I’m drowning in applications from overqualified people. I know with the unemployment rate so high, people often have noticeably more experience than the jobs they apply for require.

However, I fear that if I hire overqualified applicants, they will leave as soon as a better job comes along. So I prefer to hire candidates ready to move up or laterally. Is it worth considering overqualified candidates? Or can we add something to the job description to improve our applicant pool?

You are in a great position. My recommendation is not worry about the future if you hire an over-qualified person. Focus on hiring the perfect person for the job. And let “what if” take care of itself.  Let’s take the following examples:

 

  • Some people you feel are ‘over-qualified’ are actually looking for a lower-pressure position. They want something they can comfortably and expertly handle in 5-days/8 hour time slot. Because they are (as you describe) “over-qualified”, your position is perfect for them.  They may not be looking for their ‘next challenge’.

 

  • Don’t assume you understand someone’s reason for applying for your job. They may want a slight career change.  Although they may seem over-qualified for the specific task you have in mind; their interest is more in a change of industry or culture.  Maybe their next challenge is getting experience in this new industry or area.   Perhaps your job offers more travel (or less travel).  It can be any number of things that attract.

 

  • Understand why you are hiring.  If you are in a production spike and need someone that will ‘hit the ground running’, hiring an over-qualified person is your best option.  If your spike is temporarily, consider contracting or temp-to-hire, until your product needs levels out a little.

 

  • To ease your discomfort around this topic, be explicit in your expectations. Explicitly announce your expectations and intentions (including the minimum length of expected stay). It’s perfectly acceptable to include the expectations to stay in this particular job for 8 months, 1 year (whatever your minimum expectations are). You can also include a contract penalty for leaving the position early (1 week, 2 week pay, whatever). This will weed-out the people that are merely using your job as a jobs-gap (bridge to another position).

 

  • Continually outline future career opportunities and advancement routes in both the technical and management ladders.   This helps retain the high-performance employees.

 Conclusions:

Don’t wait until the top-performers leave your company to figure this out.  If you don’t invest in your current employees’ career development, then you will be left with only low to mediocre performers (which make your management job that much more difficult).  Avoid offering lateral positions merely to ease your discomfort with hiring ‘over-qualified’ candidates.  Offer lateral position when it comes with additional promotion or skills advancement opportunities for the employee that is making that change.

Detaching from results opens doors to new possibilities.

This week I have been reviewing some of the events that lead me to some of my largest successes.  Almost all of them stemmed from unexpected and unforeseen resources.

Some examples:

  •   Last several years I had been invited to speak at the DevLink Technical Conferences in Tennessee.   Last year SSWUG.org was attracted to my DevLink seminars and invited me to Tuscon, AZ to tape 4 seminars for their SSWUG.org online webinar series.  This led me to a wonderful working relationship with Stephen WynKoop (founder of Bits on the Wire and SSWUG.org).  We now have a weekly interview program and online coaching series on professional development.
  •  A few years ago, I presented at a local company health fair.  There I met Theresa Corcoran (who was manning another booth at the fair.  Today we are business partners at 360 Degree Inspired Success  (www.360degreeInspiredSuccess.com)

 

In both cases, I had no reason to expect these results.

 

1)      Although DevLink is an exceptional conference, I had no reason to believe that another company would be interested in video and incorporating the 4 presentations into their main-stream learning cycle.

2)      After I connected with SSWUG, the DevLink invitation stopped coming.  This was very interesting to me because it led me to believe that my DevLink interaction has completed its mission.  The sole reason for DevLink to cross my path this way was to allow me to hook up with SSWUG and to better sales opportunities.

3)      The local company health fair only had 20 employees.  On the surface, one may have thought it wasn’t worth my time or energy.  But I met my future business partner — which is leading me to better recurring revenue stream in areas that are in my genius.

Bottom Line:

Don’t attach to a specific result.  Chances are that the results of our actions are not always predictable or immediate.

Take a deep breath and relax….everything is unfolding perfectly.

How to build a healthy employee relationship

Whether you are a small business owner or head of a corporate department, building healthy employee relationships is much like building any relationship.  Read on for some quick building blocks for a strong employer/employee foundation.
Some significant tools are:
1) Good and open communications
2) Avoiding blame or defensiveness (don’t take anything personally)
3) Don’t make assumptions (avoid judging others)
4) Incorporate aspects of coaching and mentoring (lead by outstanding example)
Key phrases to incorporate:
Someone’s performance level is dropping and they are constantly late and/or missing important meetings:
Review the previous agreement or understanding:
“John, I need help on something. Because this is a small company and we’re working hard to make it a success, I need all my staff to be working effectively and efficiently. When I first hired you, we agreed that the work-day would start promptly at 8:30am – 5:00pm (with 1 hour for lunch at 12:00). Does that match your memory?”
“yes”
Review the reason behind the rule or agreement:
“Great. The reason I need those time blocks is so that I can schedule the proper staff meetings, conference calls, project planning and schedules within those allotted blocks. With those agreements in place, I can depend upon my full staff available during those blocks. This allows the department to function seamlessly without the overhead of micromanaging and time-cards. Have I held up to my commitment to only schedule work-related activities during those hours?”
“yes”
State your observations in a non-judgmental tone:
“Great. In regards to this specific area, I have noticed that you have not be attending our staff meetings and have been arriving late and leaving earlier. This has been a recent occurrence, maybe 2 weeks. Is there something outside of the office that is affecting your ability be fully available during the regular work hours? Something that just recently happened?”
Listen with an open mind:
At this point you might discover that your employee is going through something temporary (either in or out of the office). For example: he/she may be going through a divorce and is struggling with child custody issues. It might simply be a matter figuring out the new child-drop-off patterns or resolving some additional child-care arrangements.
Come up with a plan that accomplishes both your and their needs:
In this example, it could simply be a matter of allowing the employee to work from home on the days they are responsible for their children. Or shifting the meetings that they are critical/responsible for — later in the day/morning. Or recording the staff meetings for people to review later.
Bottom line: A healthy employee relationship is not much different from any personal or business relationship. It takes compassion without compromising your individual or business goals, mission or vision. Majority of the time, there is a solution that uplifts both sides.
